STRAIGHT SHOOTER

GS: How many years can a woman pool player play professionally?

Lee: There are a lot of variables. Part of it of course is luck. Part of it is skill. You need to stay talented which means that you have to keep up with all the women that are shooting at you. Which means that when they're playing pool you need to be playing pool, whenever they're sleeping and eating you need to be playing pool, when they're watching a movie, you need to be playing pool. I live by that.
"Finally there came a day when they said, 'As much as we hate it, you don't get to the New York State championships by accident. You must have been practicing all the time.'"

GS: How long can you stay in pool?

Lee: I can probably be playing pool 'til my eyes go. That is not my goal. I want to be the greatest pool player that ever lived. Which means that I have to play ten times as much anybody else. I have to continue to have the love and the desire that I have now. Without it, it's really hard to get to the top no matter what people say. You only have one life, you gotta love it and you have to stay dedicated. A lot of people talk about what they need to do but they don't do it. It might be from my Corean background, but I want to be a happy wife and mother some day.

GS: When did you start working at the Bicycle Club

Lee: We started in March of this year.

GS: Are you under contract?

Lee: We have a year contract. They basically wanted me as their spokesperson for the Asian community. I come in for their grand opening and their major professional events.

GS: Do you play cards?

Lee: No. I go there and I hang out and I smile and I watch cards. Let me put it this way--if I was not a pool player, I'd probably be a card player. I personally don't gamble for the reason it hurts the image of the sport of pool. But it's exciting, and it's fun.

GS: You don't make sidebets?

Lee: I don't ever sidebet. I make money through tournament winnings...

GS: Your earnings from pool aren't that great, only about $38,000 a year?

Lee: Last year I made $55,000.

GS: Not bad for a 24-year-old but it isn't that much.

Lee: But that is only my tournament winnings. Then I make $2,500 for three hours work for exhibitions. PAGE 3
