Taiwan’s Yani Tseng won the Women’s British Open for the second straight year Sunday and put herself on track to become remembered as the most talented golfer of all time, male or female.
Tseng, 22, beat 2nd-place Brittany Lang by four strokes to become the youngest player ever to capture five major titles. The win comes on the heels of her LPGA Championship win last month.
“It’s so great making history on this golf course,” said Tseng, “and I feel wonderful right now. Next year there are another four majors and I will try and organize and keep working hard.”
Tiger Woods was 24 when he won his fifth major, a feat Annika Sorenstam didn’t match until the age of 34. Tseng has won nine LPGA tournaments, putting her securely on top of the field as the world’s best female golfer, at least for this year and possibly for some years to come. By comparison Annika Sorenstam — generally considered one of the best ever with 10 major wins — hadn’t won even one major until age the 24.
Tseng finished at a 16-under 272 with a final round 69 after trailing Germany’s Caroline Mason by two strokes going into the round. Masson slipped down to a tie for fifth with a final-round 78. Tseng is only the third player to win consecutive British titles, along with Sherri Steinhaurer (1998, 1999) and Debbie Massey (1980, 1981).
Lang’s final-round 67 gave her a 276 total, one ahead of Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and two ahead of South Korea’s Amy Yang, who also shot a final-round 67.
Tseng got off to a shaky final-round star, missing a 3-footer for par. She made that up with birdies on the third and the sixth, putting her in the lead by the time she was halfway done with the round.
“I was a little nervous before the start, but then I hit a good tee shot and I felt good,” she said. “I feel that, having been in this position in a major a few times before, I am getting more mature and can handle the pressure better.”
