Action star Jet Li has become a Singapore citizen, reported Singapore’s Business Times. The news was startling in light of Li’s status as China’s leading entertainment figure.
The paper did not say when the Beijing native assumed his new nationality but also reported that Li bought a property in the city state worth about 20 million Singapore dollars (US$14 mil.).
Li is best known for combining his kung fu virtuosity with considerable acting skills in films like Hero, Fearless and Romeo Must Die. He first attained fame as China’s Wu Shu champion at the age of 12.
Li isn’t the first Chinese star to become a Singapore citizen. Actress Gong Li became a Singapore citzen last year. She is best known for Farewell My Concubine and later Memoirs of a Geisha.
Citing confidentiality, Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) refused to not confirm the report. Li’s One Foundation also refused comment.
