By wchung | 01 May, 2025
The percentage of smokers among Japan’s adult population fell 2.2 percent last year to a record low of 21.7 percent in 2011, reported Japan Tobacco Inc. Thursday. It was the 16th consecutive year-on-year decline.
The drop was attributed to an aging population, a growing awareness of the health effects of smoking and last October’s sharp hike in tobacco taxes.
Smoking fell most among men, from 36.6% to 33.7%. Female smokers fell 1.5 points to 10.6%.
The total number of smokers in Japan fell 2.16 million to 22.79 million. Japan’s population if 125 million.
