Members of S. Korea’s foreign populations are about three times as likely as a citizen to commit murder, according to data released by the nation’s police departments.
Foreigners comprised 7.9% of the 1,298 people charged with murder in 2011 though they are only 2.8% of S. Korea’s population.
Foreigners are far more likely to commit violent crimes like murder or rape. Among foreigners they made up 31% of the crimes committed compared with 22 % of the crimes committed by citizens.
Between 2007 and 2012 the number of foreigners living in S. Korea rose 30% from 1.06 million to 1.4 million this year. But the number of crimes committed by foreigners surged 85% from 14,524 to 26,915.
To combat this alarming trend Seoul police are looking into measures like boosting patrols in the Itaewon and Guro districts which have large foreigner populations.
