South Korean TV shows are now being watched throughout North Korea, including remote regions near the Chinese border, reported Open Radio for North Korea.
Residents living as far north as Onsong, North Hamgyong Province — just across the Tumen River from China — can now access S. Korean TV with a little technical knowledge, the radio station said.
“People in Onsong can watch South Korean programs real-time by adjusting their TV channels,” said a source in that town. “The North Korean authorities give out licenses to watch TV and listen to radio only if the channels are soldered in place to prevent people from clandestinely watching or listening to foreign programs, but people with enough technical knowledge can alter the channels.”
The best reception for South Korean TV is between 9 p.m. and midnight when the news is on [North] Korean Central TV.
“Some people remove the soldering on the receivers at this time and then put it back before they go to bed,” said the source.
North Koreans were apparently astonished and delighted when they first discovered South Korean TV broadcasts, possibly some time in 2010. Today watching South Korean TV has become so commonplace that some N. Koreans are no longer fearful of being discovered by security officials. They simply tell officials that there is nothing worth watching on North Korean TV, according to the source.
