San Gabriel Square

an Gabriel Square is the only Asian shopping area big enough to make you forget that you're actually in America. This sprawling 12-acre, 220,000-square-foot multi-level mega-mall is on the corner of Valley Boulevard or Del Mar, at the junction of the Asian-majority cities of Monterey Park and San Gabriel. That puts San Gabriel Square (also known as the Ranch 99 Plaza or the Focus Plaza) at the geographical center of San Gabriel Valley, an area in which you can drive for miles and see only Asians.

Another testament to San Gabriel Square's size: it's the only Asian mall in the U.S. to be anchored by a department store (Focus) and an Asian supermarket (Ranch 99). The only thing that suggests that you're still in America is the pastel mall's California-mediterranean architecture. The Chinese signage on the establishments reinforce the philosophy behind the mall: that a transplant from Taiwan or Hong Kong should have no reason to feel homesick.

Boutiques, herbal medicine shops, professional offices and over a dozen restaurants and cafes fill the four levels, with the gigantic Sam Woo Seafood Restaurant occupying the top level. This is the place to bring friends who still don't understand that Asians are the growth factor in Los Angeles County.
