Mitsubishi Motors became the latest automaker to sign Korea’s LG Chem as the battery supplier for its upcoming electric and hybrid vehicles, reports Chosun Ilbo. Mitsubishi is Japan’s no. 7 carmaker.
The pact contemplates, among other projects, a technique for installing power control and crash safety devices on LG Chem’s lithium-ion batteries. The new batteries are expected to be used for electric vehicles Mitsubishi plans for 2012 and new plug-in hybrids slated for 2013.
Ford, GM, Volvo and China’s Changan Automobile signed similar deals with LG Chem beginning late last year.
