BERKELEY TOPS IN ASIAM FRESHMEN

C Berkeley leads all U.S. universities in Asian Americans freshmen enrollment for the fall quarter, with Asian Americans making up 44.8% of its total declared freshmen enrollment of over 3,600.
     Coming in a close second is UCLA with Asian Americans making up 41.2% of 3,840 freshmen who have declared their intention to enroll this fall.
     Asian Americans make up larger percentages of the freshmen enrollments at UC Irvine and UC Riverside, with about 55% and 51%, respectively, but both campuses have far smaller student bodies than UCLA and UCB.
     Students declaring themselves as Whites make up 31.5% of UC Berkeley's 99 freshman class and 32.7% of UCLA's. For the past three decades the percentage of Asian Americans have been rising at all eight UC campuses with undergraduate enrollments while that of Whites has been declining.
     If the 11% of students who choose not to declare their race are factored in, the percentages of new Asian and White freshmen would increase to 48.5% and 35.6%, respectively, for UC Berkeley and 45.3% and 35.9%, respectively, of UCLA.
     UCLA currently enjoys both the highest number of applications and the highest overall enrollment rate among admitted freshmen with over 40%. However, UC Berkeley is believed to enjoy the highest enrollment rate among admitted Asian American freshmen.
